Photodating 1870s

This is one of a series of pages consisting of photgraphs of costumes which generally only includes images which bear dates.

At present there are also pages for the 1860s, 1880s, 1900s, 1910s, 1920s, 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. Cartes de visites and Cabinet Cards are rarely marked with dates. My guide to dating them relies on other features.

Unless otherwise stated, the models are likely to be British.

1870

Not much costume to see beyond the beard of this hirsute fellow from Rossshire north of Inverness in Scotland.

1875

Vandyke and Brown of Liverpool took this image in Liverpool in October 1875.

1876

This woman was recorded in Limavady in County Londonderry, now in Northern Ireland in 1876.

1877

Distinctive bow tie and fashionably wide lapels in London.

1878

Newcastle on 24 April 1878, the same day as the next group:

Another interesting Carte de Visite from Laws of Newcastle (qv). The distinctive curve to the brim of the contemporary bowler hat is well illustrated.

1879

Mr Kisch clearly only getting established in Natal in South Africa in January 1879.
