Topsy Johnson (1889 to 1902). Miss Johnson was the first woman on record to have swum across the River Tay in 1909, from Broughty Ferry to Tayport. Her time was one second under fifty minutes. She swam for both Perth SC and St Thomas’ in Arbroath. In 1989 she was living in Wales when she reached the age of 100. She recalled having been awarded a crate of kippers for her efforts and having eaten the fish until she couldn’t face another one.
