Train Travel Blogs

Another off-topic series of pages the main purpose of which is to introduce travel blogs by Interrail, starting with a trip in April/May 2025:

Interrail hints

1 Interrail tickets need to be used within a year so you can buy well in advance – discounts are offered reasonably regularly. We plan to buy on Black Friday for the next year.

2 Choose your class; the first class is not very much more expensive than the standard and, when you consider how expensive first class to London and then Paris are, good value.

3 Choose the number of days on which you will travel. It will be cheaper to buy local journeys than use the pass. On the other hand, erring on the side of caution points to buying more days for greater flexibility. The pass will allow you one day to get out of the UK and one to get back in so you need four days for starters to get significantly into Europe and back.

4 Eurostar only release a small number of places for Interrailers on their trains. Book yours as early as you can.

When underway

5 Add your journey to the pass before you start the journey; update as you go if you change your plans;

6 Always remain within sight of the departure boards in the station, on the platform and on the train; things can change and you don’t want to rely on understanding an announcement.

7 Travel with snacks;

8 Choose accommodation near the train station you are planning to depart from or in the town centre;

Hints for Hoteliers

  1. Don’t hide the stairs; lots of people are happy to leave the lifts for those who need them;
  1. People like baths;
  1. Gluten-free breakfasts are increasingly in demand;
  1. Decorative themes can become a focus of annoyance if the service is not up to scratch;
  1. Towels belong in bathrooms, not on beds;
  1. Cushions belong on chairs, not on beds.
